In the 1980's Wally Conran, the breeding manager of the Australian Guide Dogs Assoc in Victoria,
first purposely mated a Poodle and a Labrador Retriever to produce a hypo-allergenic guide dog, for a visually impaired woman in Hawaii.
Of the three resulting offspring, only one puppy, Sultan proved to be suitable. Sultan's allergy-friendly coat,
trainability and temperament produced the first officially purpose bred Labradoodle.
The Breeding Centres Tegan Park and Rutland Manor went on with his work and introduced other breed infusions into Labradoodles.
- English Cocker Spaniel
- American Cocker Spaniel
- Irish Water Spaniel
- Curly Coated Retriever
They went on to further develop the non-shedding Multi-Generation Labradoodle, the Australian Labradoodle.
In 98 % of the cases the Australian Labradoodle gives no allergic reaction

There are 2 different types of coats:
- Wool: This is a curly coat which looks like the poodle coat, but a little more loose.
this coats requires a little more brushing
- Fleece: This coat is easy to maintain, feels very soft
and needs to be brushed once a week
Australian Labradoodles don't have an undercoat and are non-shedding.
They do have hair loss, this is the dead hair which will be removed by brushing. This can be compared with hair loss of people.
The dogs do lose their coats once. Between 8 and 14 months they lose their puppy coat. This needs to be brushed out.
This is the period when they need to be brushed a few times a week.
The coat is self cleaning. After playing in the mud the sand falls out of the coat when he is dry.
